Hollywood’s Big Five Shrink to Four as Paramount and Warner Bros Unite Under Skydance

The landscape of Hollywood’s major film studios has shifted dramatically as Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. have officially united under the Skydance corporate umbrella, reducing the industry’s “big five” to a group of four. The merger follows a protracted and complex saga in which the historic Warner Bros. studio faced a potential acquisition by streaming giant Netflix, only for David Ellison’s Skydance, backed by Paramount’s ownership, to outbid the competitor.

Once legal challenges filed against the deal collapsed, the two entertainment powerhouses formally became divisions of Skydance. They now stand alongside Sony, Disney, and Universal as the remaining major studio players in the film industry.

The implications of the merger extend well beyond movie production. Skydance has indicated that its streaming platforms, HBO Max and Paramount+, will eventually consolidate into a single service, although no specific timeline has been announced. The new conglomerate will also oversee a vast array of television networks, including HBO, Showtime, CBS, MTV, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, TNT, TBS, and CNN.

The inclusion of CNN within this portfolio has drawn significant scrutiny. This concern arises against the backdrop of recent turmoil at CBS News, where oversight by Bari Weiss has coincided with declining ratings and prestige for flagship programs like 60 Minutes. While current CNN chair Mark Thompson is expected to remain in place and Skydance has asserted that CNN will retain editorial independence, skeptics point to Ellison’s close relationship with Donald Trump, who has frequently criticized the network.

Despite the establishment of an oversight board with appointees from Ellison, many observers remain concerned about the potential impact on journalistic integrity given the political ties involved.

3 responses to “Hollywood’s Big Five Shrink to Four as Paramount and Warner Bros Unite Under Skydance”

  1. Hollywood just got a lot less competitive. Disney and Universal must be grinning ear to ear while we lose yet another independent voice.

  2. I’m honestly shocked CNN is getting bundled into this media empire. The political ties mentioned are deeply worrying for press freedom.

  3. A single streaming service for HBO and Paramount+ sounds like a nightmare for consumers. I hope they actually deliver on convenience.
