Accelerating glacial melt in the Himalayas is pushing the mountain range toward a critical ecological threshold, posing severe risks to regional stability and India’s economy, according to a new report. The findings follow devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet that claimed over 1,300 lives, underscoring the dangers of a rapidly shifting landscape.
Produced by global consultancy Systemiq in collaboration with the Integrated Mountain Initiative, and with technical input from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, the study indicates that Himalayan glaciers are now losing mass 65% faster than they did a decade ago.
A significant concern is the inadequate monitoring of these changes. While an estimated 40,000 glaciers exist across the Himalaya-Karakoram region, only about 21 are subject to detailed, sustained observation. This gap is critical as retreating glaciers leave behind expanding lakes dammed by unstable rock and ice deposits. Simultaneously, warming temperatures are destabilizing permafrost and high-altitude slopes, creating a potential for cascading natural disasters.
The physical evidence of these risks is already apparent in India. Although the Himalayas cover just 18% of the country’s landmass, they are the source of approximately 35% of its natural disasters. In July, the Indian government informed parliament that 56 glacial lakes had been classified as “very high risk” following a 2025 assessment of 189 high-risk lakes. The Central Water Commission is currently tracking 2,485 glacial lakes larger than 10 hectares across the nation’s Himalayan river basins.
Recent history illustrates the catastrophic potential of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). In 2023, a GLOF in Sikkim state killed at least 70 people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities. A similar event in Uttarakhand in 2021 resulted in more than 200 deaths after massive floods swept through the Rishiganga and Dhauliganga valleys.
Beyond immediate disasters, the long-term viability of South Asia’s water systems is at stake. ICIMOD predicts that “peak water”—the point where glacier runoff is at its maximum before declining—will be reached around the middle of the century in most Hindu Kush Himalayan river basins. This transition threatens hundreds of millions of people who rely on these rivers for agriculture, energy, and daily use.
The economic stakes are substantial. The report estimates that Himalayan water resources support roughly 20% of India’s GDP, sustaining industries ranging from wheat and rice farming to tea production, hydropower, and pilgrimage tourism. However, the mountain states themselves capture only about 5% of that economic value.
“The Himalayas are the Third Pole,” said Lord Nicholas Stern, chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics. “Unlike the Arctic or Antarctic, this pole has hundreds of millions of people living beneath it.” He warned that the ecological foundations of this system are approaching a tipping point, describing the mountains as vital national and international infrastructure.
The report highlights that not all drivers of glacier loss are outside the region’s control. Approximately one-third of Himalayan glacier melt is attributed to black carbon pollution, largely from brick kilns in the plains. Soot deposited on snow and ice absorbs more sunlight, accelerating melting. Unlike global greenhouse gas emissions, black carbon is a pollutant that India and its neighbors can target directly.
Arushi Chopra, senior director at Systemiq and lead author of the report, stated, “The Himalayas are approaching a tipping point, with millions of lives and livelihoods hanging in the balance. Glaciers are melting faster than they were a decade ago.”
To address these challenges, the research proposes 10 priority transitions, including reducing black-carbon emissions, expanding monitoring networks, improving disaster early-warning systems, and reforming tourism practices. Currently, the Indian Himalayan region receives roughly 400 million tourist visits annually. Researchers argue that the focus should shift from maximizing visitor numbers to generating and retaining local economic value.
Pema Gyamtsho, director general of ICIMOD, emphasized the complexity of the emerging threats. “Glaciers are retreating, permafrost and high-mountain slopes are becoming increasingly unstable, and communities and infrastructure downstream face growing risks from complex and cascading hazards,” he said.
Gyamtsho also noted that these hazards do not respect national borders. He urged cross-border cooperation on monitoring, shared risk information, and joint investment in resilience, stressing that no single country can adequately address the risks facing the livelihoods and economies of hundreds of millions of people dependent on the Himalayas.
Brick kilns are a tangible target. Reducing black carbon could buy us time while we tackle global emissions.
