HBO’s ‘War’ Delivers a High-Profile Battle of Divorce and Law

HBO has launched a new anthology drama titled War, a series structured around legal conflicts involving prominent clients in London. The inaugural season focuses on the dissolution of a celebrity marriage, headlined by Dominic West and Sienna Miller.

The narrative centers on Morgan Henderson, a technology executive played by West, and his wife Carla Duval, an A-list actress portrayed by Miller. Their union is depicted as deteriorating long before it publicly fractures, a dynamic West notes is familiar territory for his character types. West, known for roles in The Wire and The Crown, frequently portrays men who struggle to acknowledge their own culpability when facing consequences.

At the start of the first episode, the couple appears mutually aware that their marriage is ending, yet neither has taken definitive action. This equilibrium shifts during an awards dinner attended by Morgan without his wife, where he encounters another woman, sparking the chain of events that leads to the split.

The divorce has been characterized by legal observers within the show as the most significant in British history. The proceedings pit two distinct law firms against one another. Morgan hires Cathcarts, an establishment firm with traditional aesthetics, represented by the formidable St. John Smallwood, played by Pip Torrens. Conversely, Carla retains Taylor & Byrne, a modern practice led by the married duo Serena and Nick, portrayed by Phoebe Fox and James McArdle.

The episode also introduces Johnny, an ambitious lawyer played by Archie Renaux. Having left a New York position for reasons that remain obscure, he is currently working as a waiter in London while navigating the precarious job market. Johnny interviews with both competing firms and is positioned to influence the trajectory of the case.

Created by George Kay, War is designed as an anthology, with each subsequent season examining a different high-stakes legal dispute between the two rival firms.
