Harvest Moon and Saturn Set for Spectacular Weekend Rise

One of the year’s most prominent full moons will ascend into the eastern sky on Saturday, September 26. The Harvest Moon, which reaches its official peak at 12:49 p.m. EDT that day, will appear in the constellation Pisces. Observers will have a second opportunity to view the lunar event on Sunday, September 27.

The moon earns the Harvest Moon moniker because it is the full moon nearest to the September equinox, which occurred on Tuesday. This year’s alignment coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, celebrated within Chinese and Vietnamese communities on the same day.

Astronomically, the Harvest Moon is notable for its unique behavior. While moonrise typically delays by approximately 50 minutes daily, the moon’s path intersects the eastern horizon at a shallow angle around the Northern Hemisphere’s autumnal equinox. This geometry minimizes the shift in rising times, creating a sequence of evenings where bright moonlight arrives shortly after sunset. Historically, this extra illumination assisted farmers during autumn harvests, prior to the advent of electric lighting and modern machinery.

Across North America, the lunar disk will emerge above the eastern horizon while twilight still lingers. On Sunday, moonrise will be delayed by only about 25 minutes compared to the previous evening. Saturn will also be visible, positioned just below the moon and bright enough to spot with the naked eye. A telescope or binoculars can provide a clearer view of both celestial bodies.

The subsequent full moon, the Hunter’s Moon, is scheduled for late October. Depending on the observer’s time zone, it will appear on either Friday, October 25, or Saturday, October 26. This event will also be a supermoon, causing the moon to look larger and brighter than usual.
