Hallgrimsson hopes no team endures Ireland’s gruelling window

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson expressed relief that a difficult international break has concluded, stating he hopes no other national team is forced to endure similar circumstances.

The squad played four matches over 14 days, traveling approximately 5,000 miles with only one fixture played at home. The window ended with a behind-closed-doors 1-1 draw against Israel in Backa Topola, Serbia, leaving Ireland with five points from twelve available.

Before the match, the team faced significant pressure from the ‘Stop The Game’ campaign by Irish Sport for Palestine, which called for a boycott due to the conflict in Gaza. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the Israel fixtures, citing moral objections, while the remaining players voted on whether to proceed.

On the eve of the Serbia match, Hallgrimsson’s press conference was disrupted when an Israeli journalist alleged that some Irish players made racist comments during their previous 3-0 win in Debrecen. The Football Association of Ireland strongly denied the claims and launched an investigation into racist abuse directed at their own players by Israeli supporters.

Midfielder Finn Azaz was an unused substitute in both recent games. The Southampton player has Israeli heritage through his mother, which created a complex situation given the squad’s decision to wear black armbands and bow their heads during the Israeli national anthem.

Hallgrimsson explained that he rested Azaz because he believed the midfielder was not physically or mentally prepared following his full 90-minute performance against Austria.
