Google is introducing a new experimental feature on the Pixel 11 that allows users to delegate telephone calls to local businesses to its Gemini AI assistant. The function is designed to handle routine tasks such as checking product availability, making reservations, or rescheduling appointments, effectively eliminating the need for users to wait on hold themselves.
According to Google, the process does not require the user to initiate the dial. By simply instructing Gemini through the app to call a business on their behalf, the AI takes over the entire interaction. It introduces itself, navigates automated phone menus, endures hold times, and conducts the conversation with a representative on the other end.
Users retain oversight throughout the interaction. A live transcript of the call is displayed, allowing them to monitor the progress and intervene if necessary.
The live transcript feature is smart. At least you know exactly what the AI promised on your behalf.
Where is the human touch? I prefer calling directly to make sure my request is understood properly.
Finally, someone is solving the worst part of customer service. Can’t wait to try this experiment.
Does it work with businesses that have terrible phone menus? I’m skeptical it can handle the chaos.
This is a game-changer for my daily schedule. No more holding on hold for twenty minutes!
