Google to Restrict Free Access to Gemini Flash and Pro Models

Google to Restrict Free Access to Gemini Flash and Pro Models

Google announced adjustments to its Gemini application and website that will alter the experience for users without a paid subscription. Effective October 9, individuals with free accounts will no longer have the ability to select or use the Gemini Flash and Pro models. Currently, users can choose between three model options via a dropdown menu in the app or adjacent to the input field on desktop. Following the change, all free queries will automatically run on Flash-Lite, which Google describes as its most economical model. The standard Flash tier offers improved performance over Lite, while the Pro tier is engineered for advanced reasoning and more demanding tasks.

Subscribers to Google AI Plus, the entry-level plan priced at $5 per month in the United States, will also experience a reduction in capabilities. They will lose access to the Gemini 3.1 Pro model, which Google highlights for its proficiency with complex mathematics and coding challenges, as well as its enhanced comprehension of text, files, images, and video content. Consequently, users relying on Gemini for coding assistance or academic research involving large volumes of documentation may find it necessary to upgrade to the AI Pro plan, which retails for $20 monthly. The premium AI Ultra tier, offering higher usage allowances, is priced at a minimum of $100 per month.

Alongside these model restrictions, Google is introducing adjustable “effort level” settings for each available model. Users will be able to select from low, medium, or high effort, with higher settings granting the AI greater capacity to tackle tasks. While higher effort levels yield more comprehensive responses, they also consume a larger portion of the user’s usage limit. Additionally, AI Ultra subscribers will gain access to a “Deep Think” option, allowing them to utilize Gemini’s maximum processing power.

Furthermore, AI Ultra members will be among the first to access Gemini 4 Argon upon its general public release. At present, this model is exclusively available to participants in Google’s Fairwind Program, which serves government entities and trusted partners.

  1. Free tier shrinking again. Flash-Lite will likely be painfully slow and generic. Thanks for nothing, Google.

  2. $20 a month is steep for basic coding help. Is the quality gap really that significant, or just marketing fluff to force upgrades?
