Google has announced a new wave of updates for its Pixel lineup, introducing features designed to streamline communication with important contacts and improve security across devices. The release, detailed in a recent blog post, targets Pixel 6 and newer smartphones as well as the Pixel Watch 5.
For smartphone users, the update expands how individuals can interact with their VIP contacts directly from the home screen. Through enhanced widget options, users can quickly initiate texts or calls to their favorite contacts without navigating through apps. Additionally, new notification badges provide an at-a-glance indicator of whether a message from a VIP is urgent or remains unread.
Security is also being bolstered with an expansion of Google’s Scam Detection feature. Operating in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India, Germany, Mexico, Japan, and France, the tool will now alert users to potentially fraudulent messages appearing in their notification shade across various chat applications. For users in the United States specifically, scam alerts will additionally appear directly within the Gboard keyboard interface.
The update also brings Wear OS 7 to all Pixel Watch 5 devices. This refresh includes a more personalized version of Gemini that functions offline, alongside improved GPS accuracy for route tracking. Furthermore, one-handed gesture controls are being expanded; users can now use a double-pinch motion to open the notification center, scroll through Gemini responses or Wallet cards, and toggle between Google Maps reviews. Wrist rotation continues to serve as the primary method for returning to the previous screen.
In a collaborative move with Warner Bros. Discovery, eligible Pixel 6 and newer users in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan, and Australia can customize their devices with Harry Potter Audiobook Packs. These packs alter wallpapers, icons, and sounds to match the franchise’s aesthetic. Participants will also receive two free months of an Audible subscription.
Harry Potter wallpapers are cute, but I’d rather they fixed the GPS accuracy issues first.
Finally, gesture controls that actually make sense. Double-pinch for notifications? Yes please.
