George Russell Claims Progress Against Teammate Antonelli Amid Title Deficit

George Russell has stated that he possesses a strategy to match the speed of Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, but conceded that his championship hopes require favorable circumstances to remain alive. The German driver trails the Italian by 66 points with ten races remaining in the 2026 Formula One season.

Russell’s title aspirations took a significant blow at the Italian Grand Prix last weekend, where he surrendered victory to Antonelli. The reigning champion started from the back of the grid at Monza after incurring a penalty for exceeding his engine-component allocation, yet still managed to overtake Russell, who began from second place, to claim the win.

Despite the setback, Russell expressed satisfaction with his recent performance improvements since the summer break. He highlighted that he has outqualified Antonelli in the three sessions held thus far and believes his race pace is now competitive with his teammate’s.

“I do have an answer and I’m working on it, and it’s been much improved,” Russell said. “I’m very pleased with that sort of step I’ve taken because fundamentally changing the driving style is achievable for a lot of drivers, but then actually being fast with it is another topic.”

However, the path to a first drivers’ world title is complicated by more than just on-track performance. Russell faces an automatic grid penalty for installing new engine parts later in the season, which will force him to start at least one race from the rear of the field. Additionally, he admitted that replicating Antonelli’s consistency has been challenging, noting that the young Italian deserves his current position in the standings.

“I’m not trying to be delusional. The reality is my team-mate’s done a better job than me this year,” Russell acknowledged. “If I want to win this championship, I’m going to need some luck and that’s where we are. I’m sort of being quite realistic about the position we’re in.”

Antonelli, who has secured seven victories compared to Russell’s two, remains the overwhelming favorite to clinch the championship. Despite his commanding lead, the 20-year-old insists he avoids thinking about the title standings during free practice, qualifying, or races, preferring to focus solely on winning each event.

Behind the Mercedes duo, Lewis Hamilton sits 76 points adrift in third after dropping points at Monza, while Lando Norris trails further back in fourth, 96 points behind Antonelli. The championship battle resumes this weekend at the new Madring circuit in Madrid for the Spanish Grand Prix.

  1. I wonder if Mercedes can keep up with Red Bull’s pace? Hamilton dropping points makes third place look tight too.

  2. Antonelli driving with zero pressure while George carries the weight of expectation is a tough mental game for both.

  3. Russell admitting he needs luck is brutally honest. Usually drivers stay positive, but the data here is pretty damning.
