Gamers and Developers Clash With NVIDIA Over DLSS 5 Image Alteration

During its GTC conference on March 16, NVIDIA introduced DLSS 5, labeling it the most significant advancement in graphics technology since the advent of real-time ray tracing in 2018. The company asserts that the new system will achieve photorealistic visuals by utilizing AI to repaint lighting and materials within games in real time. However, this announcement triggered immediate criticism from gamers and developers, who accused the GPU manufacturer of imposing an AI filter that erases original artistic direction.

Interest in the controversy resurged on August 28 following an early leak of DLSS 5 from a pre-release version of NBA 2K27. Modders subsequently attempted to force the technology into various titles, revealing issues such as an uncanny valley effect.

Unlike previous iterations of DLSS, which have focused since 2018 on performance optimization by rendering at lower resolutions or generating intermediate frames, DLSS 5 fundamentally changes the visual output. According to NVIDIA, the technology analyzes color and motion vector data to infuse pixels with realistic lighting and textures, redrawing elements like skin, hair, and fabric. CEO Jensen Huang described the innovation as the “GPT moment for graphics,” claiming it operates at 4K resolution while maintaining consistency with the game’s 3D environment. Major publishers, including Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft, Tencent, NetEase, and Warner Bros. Games, have agreed to support the feature upon launch.

Criticism has largely stemmed from NVIDIA’s own demonstrations. In March, footage of DLSS 5 running on Resident Evil Requiem and Starfield showed characters with unnaturally smooth, glossy features. Viewers compared the effect to beauty filters, coining the term “yassified” to describe the outcome. One popular comment on NVIDIA’s reveal video, which likened the results to AI-generated imagery, received more likes than the official video itself.

In response to aesthetic concerns, an NVIDIA representative stated that developers retain full artistic control over DLSS 5 to preserve their unique visual styles. However, the backlash extends beyond appearance. Karla Ortiz, an artist known for her work with Ubisoft and Blizzard, criticized the technology on Bluesky as disrespectful to developer artistry, arguing that studios aiming for hyperrealism would implement it natively. Concerns were also raised about visual convergence, where different games might begin to look identical after passing through the same AI model.

Tensions escalated when Jensen Huang dismissed critics during a Q&A session, stating they were “completely wrong” and insisting the technology operates at the geometry level under developer supervision rather than acting as a superficial filter. Bethesda confirmed that its art teams would tune the effect and make it optional for players in Starfield, while Capcom revealed it was unaware its game had been included in the demo.

Since the leak in late August, players have experimented with DLSS 5 in titles ranging from Control to Monster Hunter Rise. While early reports highlighted poor image quality and performance costs, subsequent tests impressed some users, leading TechRadar to note a potential shift in public opinion. DLSS 5 is set for an official release this fall, with outcomes largely dependent on whether developer-tuned implementations validate NVIDIA’s claims of creative control.
