French Finance Minister Invites UK to Rejoin EU Amid Burnham’s Pledge

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure has issued an invitation for the United Kingdom to fully rejoin the European Union. The offer comes in response to recent comments made by UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who suggested during his Labour party conference speech that his government would seek deeper integration with the bloc.

Burnham’s address included a commitment to discuss the possibility of a second referendum to reverse the consequences of Brexit. In light of this development, Lescure used the opportunity to welcome the prospect of enhanced relations between the UK and the EU.

The French finance minister indicated that the door remains open for the UK to “come all the way back” to the European Union. The upcoming summit later this year is expected to be a key venue where these discussions on closer ties will take place.

  1. Interesting timing. Lescure is clearly looking to strengthen Franco-British ties before the next major European political shifts occur.

  2. My wallet disagrees. Rejoining means adopting the euro eventually, and I am not giving up the pound anytime soon.

  3. Wait, does Burnham actually have a concrete plan, or is this just political theater for the upcoming election cycle?

  4. Finally, some common sense from France. It is time for both sides to move past the bitterness of the past decade.
