France Releases Defence Files in Italy’s Ustica Crash Investigation

France has agreed to provide Italian judicial authorities with defence-related documents, sparking optimism that a resolution may finally be within reach for the 1980 crash of a passenger aircraft near the island of Ustica. The incident remains one of Italy’s most perplexing historical mysteries, with a former Italian president previously asserting that the plane was accidentally shot down by a French fighter jet.

However, skeptics argue that these newly shared files are unlikely to provide definitive answers or identify those responsible. Critics suggest the documents may not illuminate the causes behind the tragedy or point to a specific culprit, leaving the enigma surrounding the disaster intact despite the diplomatic cooperation.

  1. I doubt these files will change much. Previous investigations went nowhere, so why expect a different outcome this time around?

  2. Finally some progress after forty years! Hopefully this finally gives the families closure they have waited so long for.
