France’s wine industry is preparing to report its lowest production levels in three decades, following the country’s hottest summer on record. According to the agriculture ministry, vineyards devastated by extreme heat and prolonged drought are expected to yield just under 34 million hectoliters this season.
Initial figures indicate a 6% decline compared to last year’s harvest and a steeper 17% drop when measured against the average production between 2021 and 2025. The severe weather conditions have not only reduced volumes but also prompted fears regarding wine quality.
Beyond the climatic challenges, winemakers are concerned about “smoke taint” resulting from widespread wildfires. The contamination from smoke threatens to further degrade the quality of the vintage, compounding the economic impact of the significantly lower yields across French vineyards.
