France Apologizes to US Over UN Social Media Post, Unblocking Ambassador Appointment

France’s permanent mission to the United Nations announced on Friday that it regrets a recent online statement criticizing the United States’ voting record at the UN General Assembly. The apology is expected to resolve a diplomatic standoff that has prevented the confirmation of Aurélien Lechevallier as France’s new ambassador to Washington.

Washington had withheld approval of Lechevallier’s appointment following the controversy. On Saturday, a US State Department official told AFP that American officials appreciated the French statement and are eager to continue collaborating on shared values and interests.

The dispute originated from a post published by France’s UN mission on the social media platform X after the General Assembly voted on July 24. The United States was among 10 nations, including Russia and North Korea, that voted against extending Volker Turk’s term as the UN human rights chief. In response, the French mission posted a critique claiming, “The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore,” citing Turk’s repeated questioning of policies under President Donald Trump.

Tensions escalated days later when the US representative walked out of a UN Security Council meeting in protest after France’s ambassador addressed the council.

In its formal apology, France’s UN mission clarified that the disagreement involved a single vote and should not be interpreted as an attack on human rights. “France and the United States recently took different positions on a vote at the United Nations General Assembly. This difference concerned one vote, and not the defence of human rights,” the mission stated.

The statement further emphasized that public differences on one issue do not hinder close dialogue between the two nations or question their historical alliance. The mission added that this does not affect their ability to work together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity within multilateral forums.

Lechevallier, who currently serves as chief of staff to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, was named by President Emmanuel Macron to replace Laurent Bili. While the US approval process for French envoys is typically a formality, the appointment remained in limbo since the diplomatic friction began.
