Formula 1 has officially announced a significant expansion of its sprint race schedule for the 2027 World Championship, increasing the total from six to ten events. The newly revealed calendar includes historic venues such as Monaco, Bahrain, Japan, and Abu Dhabi hosting the format for the first time.
The sprint weekend structure involves a shortened race on Saturday following an additional qualifying session on Friday. Alongside the five debut sprint locations, the remaining events will take place in Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar, surpassing the previous seasonal maximum of six sprint rounds.
Monaco’s inclusion is expected to generate considerable debate given the circuit’s tight street layout, which makes overtaking exceptionally difficult. However, F1 officials are promoting the sprint format for the principality because it introduces a second qualifying session, widely regarded as one of the calendar’s highlights. While the sprint race result may be largely determined after the first lap, the dual qualifying sessions allow for two separate grid orders, adding unpredictability to the main event.
Stefano Domenicali, F1’s president and chief executive, expressed enthusiasm about the changes, stating that the expansion delivers “even more intensity, drama, and wheel-to-wheel action.” He also highlighted the return of Portugal and Turkey to the championship, both of which previously appeared as placeholder events during the pandemic era.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, described the 2027 schedule as a testament to the sport’s global appeal. The 24-race calendar spans five continents and combines tradition with innovation, aiming to maintain high sporting standards while boosting fan engagement.
Financially, sprint races offer benefits to organizers despite higher costs. The format provides competitive action across all three race days, potentially increasing ticket sales. For instance, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone reported its highest-ever attendance this year, with 64,000 more fans attending over four days compared to the previous non-sprint year.
The 2027 season is slated to begin in Bahrain on March 12-14, with pre-season testing scheduled for late February. However, the opening rounds in the Middle East remain subject to contingency planning due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. If conflicts prevent the region from hosting events, F1 is prepared to adjust the schedule, similar to how Australia has served as the default season opener in recent years due to the timing of Ramadan.
The full calendar includes dates running through December 2027, concluding with races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Key sprint weekends are designated in bold throughout the schedule.
