Former Australian Bishop Christopher Saunders Sentenced to 6½ Years for Sex Abuse

A former Australian Catholic bishop, Christopher Saunders, has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison for sexually abusing two young Aboriginal men. The 76-year-old, who resigned as Bishop of Broome in 2020 when allegations first emerged, was convicted last August of one count of rape and 12 counts of indecent assault.

The Western Australia trial revealed that Saunders systematically groomed his victims between 2010 and 2019. He reportedly invited the young men to “shirts-off” gatherings, provided them with alcohol, and utilized church funds and properties to facilitate the abuse. Convictions included forcing oral sex on one of the victims, as well as kissing and molesting both men.

While Saunders was acquitted by a jury regarding alleged offenses against a third young man, several other charges were dropped prior to the trial. In a poignant victim impact statement, the third young man described feeling used as a “toy,” recounting ongoing physical and emotional pain.

Saunders, who has been a priest since 1976, spent the majority of his career serving in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia. He was appointed Bishop of Broome in 1996, overseeing a vast diocese comparable in size to Turkey. Although initial police inquiries following the 2020 accusations were closed without charges, a new investigation was launched after Pope Francis ordered a historic review under the “Vos Estis Lux Mundi” framework.

These papal inquiries, introduced in 2019 to hold high-ranking church officials accountable, are rare globally. Saunders’ conviction marks a significant moment as one of the most senior Catholic leaders worldwide to face sex abuse charges. He is expected to become eligible for parole in February 2031.

  1. Thank goodness for the Vos Estis Lux Mundi framework finally being used. Accountability matters, even at the top.

  2. Is it just me, or did the Church really wait until public pressure forced their hand? The delay is disgusting.
