FlyDubai Flight Diverts to Saudi Arabia After Cockpit Stabbing

A FlyDubai aircraft traveling from Dubai to Israel was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday following a violent confrontation between pilots in the cockpit. The incident triggered fears of a potential hijacking and led Israeli authorities to scramble fighter jets.

The Boeing 737 Max 8, identified as Flight 1073, touched down in Tabuk, a city located near a military base with an adjacent civilian airport. According to Israeli security officials cited by local media, the emergency was caused by a physical fight between the two pilots, and all passengers and crew were reported safe.

Several witnesses described chaotic scenes inside the cabin. A female passenger told Israel Hayom that one of the pilots was stabbed during the brawl, and Israeli passengers stepped in to subdue the attacker. “There are people here with shirts covered in blood,” she said, characterizing the event as extremely stressful. Social media videos appeared to corroborate these accounts, showing individuals on the floor with visible blood.

Another passenger recounted to the Jerusalem Post that the attacker attempted to force the other pilot out of the cockpit, causing the plane to descend rapidly. As the aircraft lost altitude, a group of Israeli passengers rushed the cockpit and managed to remove the assailant. The witness stated that passengers then urged two off-duty pilots seated in the rear of the plane to take control of the aircraft, with one successfully assuming command.

Flight tracking data obtained by the BBC indicated that the plane plummeted more than 17,000 feet in approximately two minutes around 8:21 a.m. local time. Yasmin Abukasis, whose daughter was on board, told reporters at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport that her daughter heard screaming as the pilot called for help and the plane began to lose control.

Israeli sources identified the suspected attacker as an Omani national, though these details have not yet been officially confirmed by Israeli or Saudi authorities. A regional official briefed on the matter confirmed to the Associated Press that a fight occurred in the cockpit, while a second official noted that warplanes were scrambled due to concerns that dozens of Israeli citizens were on board.

This event occurs amid heightened tensions, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu having recently warned of escalating security threats related to operations against Hamas and Hezbollah. His office later stated that the situation was under control and that efforts were underway to return the passengers to Israel. A recovery flight was dispatched to Tabuk to transport the passengers back.

Prominent Israeli figures responded quickly to the news. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir described the incident on social media as a reminder that enemies do not value human life, calling the attacker a terrorist who planned to murder the 180 Israelis on board. Opposition politician Benny Gantz praised the “resourcefulness and courage” of the passengers, stating that their actions reflected the character of the Israeli people.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee also weighed in, noting that the incident put the Middle East on “full alert” and describing the in-flight conflict between pilots as an unusual experience.

FlyDubai, the budget affiliate of the state-owned Emirates airline, operates routes between the UAE and Israel, a connection that has grown since the two nations normalized ties in 2020. While cockpit altercations are rare, similar incidents have occurred previously, such as a 2022 case involving Air France pilots. Israel, which has not experienced a plane hijacking in decades, continues to maintain some of the world’s strictest airport security protocols.
