Flydubai Co-pilot Banned from Flying in Oman Ahead of Stabbing Attack

The co-pilot involved in the violent incident aboard Flydubai Flight 1073 was previously prohibited from flying by Omani authorities due to security fears regarding his ideological leanings, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The attack occurred on the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv route, raising significant questions about aviation hiring protocols and background checks.

The incident took place on a flight carrying 182 people, including four pilots. After the co-pilot stabbed the captain in what appears to be an attempt to crash the aircraft, two other pilots in the cabin assumed control and successfully landed the plane in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. A replacement aircraft subsequently transported the passengers to Tel Aviv.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated Thursday that the co-pilot had undergone “Islamist radical indoctrination” and intended to bring down the jet. Netanyahu confirmed that investigators are examining whether the pilot acted alone or under the direction of others, warning that any accomplices would face severe consequences.

The Wall Street Journal noted that it remains unclear whether Oman shared its concerns about the pilot’s radicalization with other nations or airlines, nor has the specific nature of his radicalization been fully disclosed. Despite the prior ban, Flydubai hired the co-pilot for a flight on a sensitive route connecting the UAE and Israel, nations linked by the 2020 Abraham Accords.

The United Arab Emirates has launched an investigation into the incident, probing possible terrorist activity or intent in the apparent hijacking attempt.

  1. Glad the other pilots managed a safe landing, but this raises serious questions about international aviation security sharing.

  2. It is terrifying that a pilot banned for radical views was still hired for such a high-stakes route. How did he slip through the cracks?
