Five Dead After Russian Drone Strikes Ukrainian Bus Near Front Line

At least five individuals were killed and seven others injured after a Russian drone struck a bus traveling near the front line in southern Ukraine, regional authorities reported on Wednesday.

The attack occurred in the vicinity of Nikopol, located in the Dnipropetrovsk region, according to Oleksandr Hanzha, the region’s governor. He shared the details via the Telegram messaging platform.

Photographs released by Ukrainian officials depicted the aftermath on a white minibus, showing shattered windows and streaks of blood running down the vehicle’s exterior. Mykola Lukashuk, who heads the Dnipropetrovsk region council, condemned the incident as a deliberate targeting of civilians.

“Russians cynically struck a passenger bus. They targeted a minibus which carried people going about their daily business,” Lukashuk said.

Nikopol is situated on the western bank of the Dnipro River, directly opposite the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian military occupation since the early stages of the conflict.

As of Wednesday, there had been no immediate comment from Russian officials regarding the strike. Both Kyiv and Moscow have consistently denied intentionally aiming at civilian populations since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

The incident adds to a sharp rise in civilian casualties documented by the United Nations. Data from the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine indicates that during the first six months of 2026, at least 1,396 civilians were killed and 7,978 wounded in Ukraine, marking a 37 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Concurrently, the UN reported that Ukrainian attacks inside Russia resulted in at least 250 civilian deaths and 1,596 injuries during the same timeframe, citing credible Russian open-source reports. This represents a 121 percent surge in civilian casualties within Russia compared to the previous year.

In other developments across the region, an explosion was heard in the capital city of Kyiv on Wednesday morning, with city authorities confirming that a Russian strike ignited a fire at a local warehouse.

Additionally, Vitalii Diakivnych, the governor of the central Poltava region, reported that energy infrastructure was targeted overnight. A Russian drone also struck an unnamed industrial facility in the area. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry announced it had hit a cargo vessel at the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk in the Odesa region.
