The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office in Pennsylvania confirmed the first measles-related fatality in the region on Saturday, adding to a growing outbreak across the state. Coroner Greg Furlong identified the deceased as a 40-year-old woman who succumbed to complications from the disease.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease,” Furlong stated. He emphasized that the woman was not vaccinated and had pre-existing health conditions that likely contributed to the severity of her illness.
According to Furlong, the woman contracted the virus after close contact with a relative or neighbor who had a confirmed case. Her husband also fell ill but has since recovered. Describing her condition as exhibiting “textbook” symptoms, including a rash that appeared after three to four days, Furlong expressed near-certainty regarding the cause of death, stating he is “110 percent” confident the infection was linked to measles pending final lab results.
Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jason Stiver issued a public warning regarding the dangers of the virus. “Many people associate measles with a childhood illness, but it can lead to severe complications in individuals of any age,” Stiver said. He noted that while rare, measles can result in serious respiratory issues, hospitalization, and death. Stiver urged residents to remain informed and follow public health guidance to prevent further spread.
The death comes as Pennsylvania grapples with a significant outbreak. State health officials previously reported two measles-related deaths in Lancaster County. As of Monday, September 14, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 693 total measles cases in the state for 2026, with 99 cases identified in the past week alone.
Nationally, the United States has recorded over 3,200 measles cases in 2026, marking the highest number in decades. Jefferson County is currently coordinating with state health authorities to manage the situation and protect public safety.
