Federal law enforcement officers conducted a search Monday morning at the Washington, D.C. residence of Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), the Department of Justice confirmed. A DOJ statement told NPR that agents from Homeland Security Investigations carried out a “judicially authorized search warrant” tied to an “ongoing federal investigation.” Officials provided no further specifics regarding the nature of the probe.
Omar responded swiftly on social media, denouncing the action as a politically motivated attack. “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote. “I will not be silenced.”
Jackie Rogers, a spokesperson for the congresswoman, characterized the operation as a “raid” and condemned it as an “outrageous abuse of power” and an unprecedented step in using federal authorities against political opponents.
The search occurred roughly a month before midterm elections, in which Omar is running for reelection. Tensions between the representative and vice presidential leadership have been high; Vice President Vance has previously accused Omar of immigration fraud, allegations she has consistently denied.
Residents in the neighborhood reported the early morning activity. Sharon Jackson, 79, who lives across the street, stated she was woken around 4:30 a.m. by loud knocking and the presence of a large federal truck. Images showed multiple Homeland Security Investigations agents moving about the property and departing in vehicles.
Let the legal process play out. Until there are charges, this is just speculation and political rhetoric on both sides.
4:30 a.m.? That’s aggressive even for a search warrant. Does this feel like standard procedure or something more sinister?
Weaponizing federal agencies against political opponents sets a terrible precedent. We need transparency here, not secrecy.
I wonder what exactly the investigation is about? The DOJ isn’t saying much, which is strange for a warrant execution.
This timing right before midterms is deeply concerning. It looks like a classic move to intimidate voters.
