Flow Neuroscience has announced the availability of its at-home wearable device for treating depression, now accessible by prescription across the United States. The Swedish company positions the headset as a non-pharmaceutical alternative for the roughly one in six American adults currently relying on antidepressant medication. However, the device carries a price tag of $2,200, which may slow its adoption among patients.
The sleek, futuristic-looking headset is worn on the forehead for 30 minutes daily and is controlled via a companion smartphone app. It delivers low-intensity electrical stimulation to the left frontal lobe, a brain region critical for regulating mood and emotions. Research indicates that individuals with depression often exhibit reduced activity and weaker neural connections in this specific area.
Flow received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval last December. The device joins a growing category of brain-monitoring and stimulation wearables, including products from companies like Cognixion and Muse. Unlike transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)—an established depression treatment that requires patients to visit clinics five days a week for several weeks and can cost up to $15,000—the Flow device is designed for convenient home use.
CEO Daniel Månsson, a clinical psychologist who co-founded the company, stated that the goal was to create a safe and effective treatment that could be used at home while still producing the necessary effects on the brain.
Clinical trials support the device’s efficacy. In a study of 174 participants with major depressive disorder, 45% of those using the Flow headset experienced symptom remission after 10 weeks, compared to 22% in the control group who used a sham device.
