Family of US citizen killed by ICE sues Trump administration

The family of Renee Good, a 37-year-old US citizen fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis this past January, has initiated civil litigation against the Trump administration. The lawsuit, filed on Thursday, alleges negligence and violations of constitutional civil rights.

According to court documents submitted by the Romanucci Blandin Law firm, the complaint claims that federal authorities engaged in a “conspiracy with discriminatory design” that authorized the use of excessive force against individuals exercising their rights under the Bill of Rights. The filing asserts that Good’s death was not an isolated incident but rather “the predictable result of a coordinated campaign” by senior administration officials to target residents of Somali or Hispanic descent and suppress protest activities in Minnesota.

Good was shot and killed inside her vehicle on January 7 while participating in daily demonstrations opposing the deployment of armed, often masked, federal agents to the state. These agents were part of Operation Metro Surge, a controversial initiative aimed at identifying and deporting undocumented migrants. Two weeks after Good’s death, another US citizen, nurse Alex Pretti, was also killed during the same enforcement operations.

The dual fatalities intensified existing protests and ultimately contributed to the termination of Operation Metro Surge by mid-February. The lawsuit identifies multiple defendants, including the ICE officer who discharged the weapon, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller, and Kristi Noem, the US Secretary of Homeland Security at the time of the shooting. One of the two twin suits names the United States government as the sole defendant, while the other specifically indicts various government and border control officials.

Brent Ganger, Good’s brother, is acting as trustee for her next of kin, which includes her three children, alongside her spouse, Becca Good. The legal team argued that Operation Metro Surge relied on “exaggerated fraud accusations” embraced by the White House as a pretext to allow federal agents to patrol neighborhoods and detain individuals based on appearance. The complaint further alleges that officials instructed agents to provoke confrontations with observers and fostered a belief that they would face no repercussions for using force.

The crackdown in Minneapolis occurred against the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s stringent migration policies and his criticism of Democratic-led local authorities for failing to adequately address crime and irregular migration.

5 responses to “Family of US citizen killed by ICE sues Trump administration”

  1. Operation Metro Surge ended too late for Renee. Hopefully, this lawsuit prevents similar tragedies from happening elsewhere.

  2. Conspiracy allegations are serious. How much evidence exists that this was a top-down directive versus just rogue officers?

  3. Another US citizen killed? The pattern here seems clear and alarming. We need independent investigations, not just civil suits.

  4. Naming high-ranking officials like Miller and Noem directly is a bold legal strategy. I wonder if the courts will entertain this angle.

  5. This is deeply saddening. A mother of three taken away in such a tragic way deserves justice for her children.
