External drives provide a practical solution for expanding laptop storage, transferring data between locations, or creating backup archives, especially since modern laptops rarely allow for easy internal drive upgrades. However, consumers must decide between solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs). Although SSDs represent newer technology, they are not universally superior; both formats have distinct advantages, making them suitable for different use cases. Given the current inflation in storage and RAM costs, selecting the appropriate drive type is more important than ever.

The primary benefit of external SSDs is their performance. Utilizing flash memory, SSDs allow for instant access to random data sections, resulting in significantly faster file transfers and application launches compared to mechanical drives. This speed advantage is particularly valuable for users who regularly move large volumes of data between devices or edit photos and videos directly from external storage. Conversely, for archival purposes where files are rarely accessed, the performance gap is less critical.

Durability and portability are additional strengths of SSDs. Because they lack moving parts, they are more resistant to damage from bumps and drops, making them ideal for frequent travel. Their compact size and lighter weight further enhance their suitability for backpacks and on-the-go use. Additionally, SSDs operate silently and consume less power, which is advantageous for users relying on battery power away from outlets.

The most significant downside of SSDs is their price per gigabyte. Even under normal market conditions, HDDs offer substantially more storage capacity for the same budget. For instance, a 1TB Samsung T9 Portable SSD is priced around $232, whereas a 2TB Seagate Portable Hard Drive costs approximately $130. This cost disparity means that while SSDs deliver speed and resilience, HDDs provide greater raw capacity for budget-conscious buyers.

External HDDs appeal mainly to those prioritizing storage volume over speed. With current price trends, SSDs costing $4TB or more become prohibitively expensive, while HDDs remain available in high capacities at reasonable prices. However, HDDs lag behind SSDs in performance, typically reading and writing at around 100MB/s, compared to 500MB/s or higher for SSDs. While adequate for general file storage, this speed is insufficient for tasks like 4K video recording or gaming. Furthermore, the mechanical components in HDDs generate noise, require more power, and are vulnerable to physical shock and extreme temperatures.

Deciding between an SSD and HDD depends largely on intended usage. An HDD is a sensible choice for permanent desktop backups where access speed is not a priority. In contrast, an SSD is preferable for users who need to frequently transfer files, play games, or edit video, effectively acting as an extension of the system’s internal storage.

External drives also offer versatility beyond computers. While consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S cannot run current-generation games directly from USB drives, they can store additional titles to reduce the need for constant deletion and redownload. Drives can also be connected to routers for network storage or to smartphones for media consumption and data management, provided the correct filesystem is used.

It is crucial to verify USB standards before purchasing. Connecting an external SSD to a slow USB 2.0 port will negate its speed benefits; users should ensure both the drive and the computer port support 10Gbps or higher for optimal performance. Alternatively, users with spare internal drives can utilize USB enclosures, such as those from Sabrent, to convert them into external drives, provided the physical size and connector type match.
