External GPUs Remain a Viable but Limited Upgrade Path

For laptop users seeking to boost gaming performance without the steep price of a new machine during the current RAM price surge, external GPUs (eGPUs) remain an option. These setups involve placing a desktop graphics card inside an enclosure connected via Thunderbolt or USB4. However, despite recent hardware improvements, significant limitations persist.

The primary drawback is performance loss due to bandwidth constraints. A standard Thunderbolt 4 connection offers 40Gbps, with only 32Gbps allocated for PCIe data—roughly one-eighth the bandwidth of a desktop PCIe 4.0 x16 slot. While textures and shaders are stored locally in VRAM, frame delivery and asset loading must traverse the cable, creating a bottleneck. Notebookcheck testing from 2021 indicated performance deficits between 7% and 32% compared to desktop equivalents, with losses shrinking at 4K resolution but increasing when rendering directly to the laptop screen. Additionally, PC Gamer found that higher-end cards like the RTX 4090 suffer disproportionately more throttling than mid-range options like the RTX 4070 Ti.

Hardware availability has seen a resurgence. Razer revived its product line in July 2025 with the Core X V2, featuring a Thunderbolt 5 dock, while Framework is developing an OCuLink-based eGPU kit for its Laptop 16. The Razer Core X V2 enclosure costs $350 and lacks a power supply or additional I/O ports, which must be purchased separately starting at $390 for the Thunderbolt 5 dock. When combined with the cost of a power supply and graphics card, the total investment often rivals that of a budget gaming desktop, negating the advantage of avoiding bandwidth limits.

Compatibility remains another hurdle. Thunderbolt 5 laptops are still rare outside of premium segments, meaning most users are limited to 40Gbps connections. Alternative standards like OCuLink, which Framework utilizes, offer higher bandwidth by running bare PCIe over a cable but sacrifice the convenience of plug-and-play single-cable docking. Furthermore, Apple has not supported eGPUs for gaming since transitioning to Apple Silicon in 2020. Although TinyGPU was approved earlier this year, it is restricted to AI workloads and lacks display output, offering no benefit for gamers.

  1. OCuLink is the real answer here. Thunderbolt will always choke high-end cards. Framework’s approach makes way more sense for enthusiasts.
