Ex-Obama advisor: Iran war threatens Trump’s political standing ahead of midterms

A former National Security Council member under the Obama administration, Charles Kupchan, stated that the ongoing war in Iran poses a significant threat to President Donald Trump’s presidency. Speaking with FRANCE 24, Kupchan characterized the conflict as “yet another failed war of choice,” arguing that it endangers the political viability of the current administration.

Kupchan highlighted that the military engagement has contributed to rising fuel and living expenses for American citizens at a critical juncture, just as early voting begins for the midterm elections. These economic pressures could potentially shift control of Congress away from the Republican party.

In addition to the geopolitical and economic concerns, Kupchan criticized the internal dynamics of the White House. He asserted that Trump’s advisers prioritize loyalty over factual accuracy, a dynamic he suggested has exacerbated the consequences of the decision to go to war.
