Europe Braces for Fallout After Historic AfD Gains in German Regional Election

The stunning victory of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the Saxony-Anhalt regional election on Sunday has triggered widespread alarm across Europe, with analysts describing the result as a “socio-political earthquake” and a watershed moment for German politics.

Although Saxony-Anhalt is one of Germany’s smallest states, home to just 1.7 million of the nation’s 59 million voters, the AfD’s landslide is being viewed as highly significant at the national level. The result intensifies pressure on the fragile centrist coalition in Berlin and could further undermine the standing of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had promised to curb the party’s popularity.
