European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to announce a significant increase in EU investment in Greenland, alongside strengthened political cooperation, during a two-day visit to the Danish Arctic territory. The move comes as a direct response to ongoing pressure from US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly argued that Greenland should come under American control.
Von der Leyen arrived in Nuuk on Sunday to demonstrate Brussels’ support for the governments of both Greenland and Denmark, which have firmly rejected Trump’s annexation ambitions. While she described the upcoming investment package as “substantial,” specific financial figures were not disclosed at the time of her arrival.
The planned investments will target key sectors including critical minerals, satellite communications, and renewable energy. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland’s Premier, stated that his government aims to build upon its existing close friendship and partnership with the European Union.
The diplomatic maneuver highlights the growing geopolitical significance of the Arctic region, as melting ice opens new shipping routes and makes mineral resources more accessible to global powers including the US, Russia, China, and European nations. Von der Leyen reflected on the environmental changes during a boat trip through an ice-filled fjord, noting on social media platform X that the visible scars of climate change on the ice sheet would remain with her, adding that “a new reality is taking shape” as the ice melts.
Trump’s demands earlier this year triggered a crisis in US-European relations and caused turmoil within the transatlantic NATO alliance. He argued that fellow NATO member Denmark was incapable of defending Greenland. European officials emphasized that Greenland is part of NATO territory, covered by the alliance’s mutual defense pact, and that the US already holds treaty rights to increase its military presence on the island.
Tensions initially eased in January when Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte agreed in Davos to initiate trilateral talks between the US, Denmark, and Greenland. However, these discussions have yet to produce a resolution, and Trump reiterated his claim for US control over Greenland at a NATO summit in Turkey this past July.
Although Greenland departed the EU in 1985, its residents remain Danish citizens and therefore hold European Union citizenship. Currently, EU funding primarily supports fishing rights and the education system. According to EU officials, von der Leyen’s new package will represent not only a substantial increase in financial support but also a broadening of the sectors eligible for EU investment.
