Estonia Bans Russian Grain Transit as Russia Strikes Ukraine

Russia has continued its bombardment of Ukrainian infrastructure overnight, with damage reported in Kyiv and Odesa. Amidst the escalating conflict, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to the frontline to inspect conditions.

In a significant move to curb Russian trade routes, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna announced that Estonia has officially banned the transit of Russian and Belarusian grain through its territory. The decision follows warnings issued last month regarding Russian companies repurposing cargo terminals at Ukraine’s Baltic and Arctic ports—shifting operations from fertiliser and coal to grain exports after Ukrainian drone attacks disrupted Black Sea shipments.

“I warned already in September: do not make plans to transport Russian grain through Estonia. Today, we turned that warning into law,” Tsahkna stated. He further noted that Estonia is coordinating with Latvia and Lithuania to ensure Baltic ports do not serve as transit routes for Russian goods.
