England School Inspections Face Second Overhaul in a Year Following Teacher Distress

School inspections in England are set to undergo significant changes for the second time within twelve months, following intense criticism that the current framework is causing severe stress and negatively impacting the mental health of educators. Education Secretary Lucy Powell has directed the schools regulator, Ofsted, to return to the “drawing board” as she expresses concern over the negative consequences of reforms introduced by her predecessor, Bridget Phillipson.

The decision comes in response to a wave of complaints from teachers who describe the new inspection system as dangerously stressful. The backlash has prompted the government to reconsider the approach, with hopes that a revised system will address the well-being concerns raised by headteachers and staff across the country.

  1. Will this actually change anything, or is Ofsted just going to tweak the wording again? I remain very skeptical.
