Eight rescued orangutans released into Borneo sanctuary following wildfires

Eight critically endangered orangutans have been reintroduced to the wild in a protected reserve in western Borneo, marking a significant milestone for conservationists following last year’s destructive wildfire season.

The group, set free on Friday, comprises three mothers, their three daughters, and two adult males. Their release follows a broader rescue operation conducted by Indonesian wildlife authorities during the peak of the fires in August and September.

During that period, a total of 46 orangutans were rescued from their natural habitat as intense blazes swept across the region. The apes were temporarily relocated to safety while their forest home was consumed by smoke and flames.

The successful release of these eight individuals highlights ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and return wildlife affected by the environmental crisis to their native ecosystems. The orangutan population remains classified as critically endangered, making such recovery operations vital for the species’ survival.
