During the inaugural day of the Liberal Democrats’ annual conference, party leader Sir Ed Davey directed sharp criticism toward Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and billionaire Elon Musk. Addressing delegates at the Brighton Centre, Davey reaffirmed that his party remains committed to battling what he described as “nasty populism” and the financial machinery behind the far-right movement.
Davey characterized Reform UK’s resources as a “£72m arsenal of hate and lies,” urging attendees to remain steadfast against the group’s strategy. He argued that the opposition hopes to wear down liberals through sustained anger and falsehoods until they relent.
Speaking from the main stage, the leader encouraged the gathered delegates not to be discouraged by these tactics. He highlighted the importance of the speeches delivered earlier in the day, noting that they demonstrated the core motivations driving the party’s continued resistance.
£72 million? That figure feels arbitrary. Do voters really care about populist rhetoric more than crumbling hospitals?
Finally, a leader with the backbone to call it what it is. We cannot let hate and lies win.
