ECB President Warns Europe Must Forge Its Own AI Path to Avoid US, China Leverage

Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, has cautioned that the European Union must establish its own artificial intelligence infrastructure to avoid becoming vulnerable to trade pressures from the United States and China.

Speaking on the risks of current dependencies, Lagarde emphasized that Europe needs to develop AI models capable of handling the majority of computational tasks using domestically based datacentres. She argued that creating technology that is “good enough” for most applications would significantly reduce the continent’s reliance on foreign powers.

The central bank chief highlighted that without such self-sufficiency, trade partners could wield unprecedented leverage in negotiations. However, she noted that if Europe invests in its own AI technologies, the threat of being shut out by major global competitors would lose its potency.

  1. Interesting point about leverage. But can the EU really compete with Silicon Valley’s sheer capital and talent pool?

  2. Agreed. Sovereignty in data is as crucial as sovereignty in currency. Europe cannot afford to be a digital colony.
