The Netherlands’ Chief of Defence, General Onno Eichelsheim, has issued an urgent call for European nations to heed the lessons emerging from the conflict in Ukraine, cautioning that the continent remains in a “window of vulnerability” until at least 2030.
Compounding these security concerns, Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi revealed that the nation’s total war expenditures are projected to hit $155 billion this year. Furthermore, the government is grappling with a critical $27 billion funding shortfall required to sustain combat operations into early 2027.
According to reports from Reuters, Koretskyi outlined plans to address a portion of this deficit through internal measures. The government intends to cover $7 billion of the gap by postponing certain expenditures, reallocating funds from other budgetary areas, and implementing cost-cutting measures.
The remaining $20 billion缺口 is expected to be addressed through ongoing negotiations with international partners, though the Prime Minister highlighted the severity of the financial strain facing Kyiv as it attempts to maintain its defensive capabilities.
As a Dutch taxpayer, I understand the urgency, but domestic austerity is already biting hard. How much more can we give?
