Downing Street has officially condemned what it described as “thuggish and intimidating behavior” displayed by far-right activists in Portsmouth. The unrest occurred after a group of demonstrators attempted to block roads, aiming to halt the processing of asylum seekers who had arrived on a boat in the city.
The incident, which persisted until approximately 3am, involved hundreds of men, some of whom were dressed in black and wearing balaclavas. Police ultimately removed the protesters by threatening them with arrest.
This event marks the second time in two days that similar disturbances have disrupted the handling of asylum arrivals in the UK, following comparable scenes in Dover earlier in the week.
