DoorDash has unveiled further details regarding its drone delivery initiative, confirming that the service will initially launch in northern California. Major fast-food chains Chipotle and Popeyes have already signed on as partner restaurants for DoorDash Air.
The company described its six-propeller aircraft as being designed to blend into local neighborhoods. According to DoorDash, the drone produces a noise level comparable to a passing car when hovering at delivery height. During initial tests, the company reported average delivery times from the restaurant to the customer’s door of less than five minutes.
DoorDash estimates that approximately 80 percent of orders available on its platform are small and lightweight enough to be transported by air. A central management system will evaluate variables such as weather conditions, ground traffic, and flight duration to determine which orders are best suited for drone transport.
During its Dash Forward event, DoorDash also announced that users in the United States can now place orders via text message using Apple’s Messages app. This feature builds upon the company’s existing Ask DoorDash assistant and eliminates the need for customers to open the dedicated application or website. Businesses will similarly be able to integrate the service into internal apps and AI agents for ordering team meals and restocking supplies.
Additionally, DoorDash expanded its Marketplace to include several apparel and beauty retailers. Macy’s, Anthropologie, The North Face, Vans, and Timberland will now offer clothing, footwear, and beauty products for delivery. The platform also introduced a returns service called Dasher Returns, which allows customers to send back items for a flat fee of $8.
