Manchester City captain Ruben Dias has praised his teammates and new recruits for their hunger to succeed, stating the entire squad is fully committed to new manager Enzo Maresca. The club has undergone significant changes this summer, investing a Premier League-record £458m while also selling players for over £300m.
The summer window saw the arrival of midfielders Enzo Fernandez, Elliot Anderson, and Ayyoub Bouaddi. However, the team also lost key figures, including 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, former captain Bernardo Silva, and John Stones.
Dias, who joined from Benfica in 2020 for £65m, was handed the armband by Maresca. He emphasized that the mix of ambitious new players and those with extensive experience at the club creates a strong dynamic.
“So many people have left and so many winners have left, and now new people have joined with a lot of ambition and people that are desperate to win,” Dias told the Football Interview. “Enzo included, that have been here and have won so much here and can very clearly point the way of how to do it.”
Maresca replaces Pep Guardiola, who stepped down after a decade in charge. Dias described Guardiola’s departure as a difficult moment but called Maresca the ideal successor due to his deep familiarity with the club’s operations.
City have started the season with four consecutive victories in the Premier League and Champions League. They now face their toughest challenge yet with a trip to Manchester United on Sunday.
When asked about differences between Maresca and his predecessor, Dias highlighted changes in training and pressing details. “I feel like everything is making a lot of sense. Everyone is buying into the idea,” he said.
At 29, Dias is one of the club’s longest-serving players and one of only four remaining from the 2023 Treble-winning squad, alongside Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Rico Lewis. He signed a contract extension until 2029 last summer and expressed excitement for the future despite the emotional challenge of seeing close friends leave.
“I am still very ambitious,” Dias added. “I am excited. I think excited is the word.”
What a contrast with Guardiola. Maresca’s focus on pressing details seems to haveclicked instantly, leaving fans very optimistic about the future.
I wonder how the squad chemistry holds up when the pressure mounts. Star power alone does not guarantee another trophy.
It is fascinating to see Dias taking the armband and guiding these hungry new signings through such a turbulent transition period.
Four wins from four sounds great, yet losing Rodri and Bernardo feels like a massive gamble for Maresca’s system.
Record spending is impressive, but winning the derby at Old Trafford will tell us if this new look City are truly ready.
