Deutsche Bank: Superintelligence Unlikely, But AI Productivity Gains Remain Key for U.S. Economy

Although the realization of “superintelligence” may remain a distant fantasy, the United States economy is still positioned to reap substantial rewards from increased productivity driven by artificial intelligence adoption, according to a new analysis from Deutsche Bank.

Jim Reid, the bank’s global head of fixed-income strategy, suggested that the widespread integration of AI tools will continue to generate economic value even if machines never achieve a level of cognitive ability that surpasses human intellect across all domains.

Reid noted a collective gap in imagination when it comes to anticipating the labor market of the future. “We all collectively lack the imagination to wonder what the jobs of the future will be,” Reid stated, emphasizing that historical technological shifts have consistently created new roles rather than simply eliminating old ones.

The concept of superintelligence is defined by Deutsche Bank as a stage beyond artificial general intelligence (AGI). While AGI refers to systems that match or exceed human capabilities in specific cognitive tasks, superintelligence would entail surpassing human performance in every conceivable intellectual area.

The terminology surrounding AI has recently become a political focal point. In September, President Donald Trump mandated that the U.S. federal government replace the term “artificial intelligence” with “superintelligence” in official communications, a move that highlights the evolving language and policy landscape surrounding the technology.

Despite the uncertainty around reaching a theoretical singularity, the practical application of AI in the workplace remains a potent driver for economic growth. Deutsche Bank’s perspective underscores a shift in focus from speculative, all-encompassing machine intelligence to the tangible productivity gains available through current and near-term AI implementations.
