Denmark has called in the Russian ambassador to protest an encounter in the Baltic Sea in which a Russian warship fired flares toward a Danish military helicopter. The incident, described by Copenhagen as part of a rising trend in Russian aggression, occurred while the Danish Fennec helicopter was conducting a routine reconnaissance mission in international waters off the port of Gedser.
According to Denmark’s armed forces, the Russian frigate launched two flares at the aircraft, with one passing at close range. No injuries were reported among the crew members on board the helicopter.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen characterized the event as evidence of Moscow’s intensifying “hybrid war against Europe.” In a statement on X, she condemned the “reckless action” intended to intimidate and divide NATO allies, vowing that Denmark would not waver. Frederiksen urged European nations to bolster their collective defenses in response to the growing threat.
Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen labeled the incident “completely unacceptable” and accused Russia of gradually shifting the boundaries of permissible behavior. The diplomatic summons served as a formal rebuke of the close-proximity flare firing, which officials noted could have jeopardized lives.
The confrontation takes place against a backdrop of heightened tensions along NATO’s eastern flank. Poland has recently scrambled fighter jets to intercept Russian drones encroaching on its airspace amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. In response to increased fears of spillover and potential direct confrontations, NATO member states in the region have intensified air patrols and other defensive measures.
