Denmark moves to legally shield citizens from deepfake misuse

Lawmakers in Denmark have proposed a new bill aimed at safeguarding citizens against the non-consensual creation of deepfake content. The legislation specifically targets the unauthorized use of a person’s voice and facial likeness to generate manipulated media.

Introduced on Wednesday, the proposed law would make it a criminal offense to utilize an individual’s voice or image for the purpose of creating such synthetic media without their permission. The measure represents a significant legislative step toward addressing the growing challenges posed by artificial intelligence-driven impersonation.

The bill is now set to proceed to the next stage of the legislative process for further review and debate.

  1. Sounds good on paper, but I wonder if there are exceptions for satire or artistic expression. Hope that’s clarified soon.

  2. Is this enforceable globally? If the server hosting the deepfake is elsewhere, how does this law actually apply?
