Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat who has increasingly distanced himself from his party’s progressive wing, made a surprise video appearance on the opening night of the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, Texas. The two-day event, hosted by President Donald Trump, aims to rally support ahead of the November elections.
In the recording, Fetterman introduced his fellow Pennsylvanian and Republican colleague, Senator Dave McCormick, identifying himself as a “common-sense Democrat.” He stated, “I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life.”
The 57-year-old first-term senator has built a profile as an outsider within the Democratic Party, notably for his staunch support of Israel and the ongoing war against Iran. These positions have drawn criticism from progressive Democrats and voters within his own party, with recent polling indicating that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters oppose current US foreign policy toward Israel.
Fetterman’s appearance at the Republican National Committee’s first-ever midterm convention is expected to intensify scrutiny from Democratic colleagues. Pennsylvania Representative Brendan Boyle, also a Democrat, immediately responded to the video. “A year ago I labeled John Fetterman ‘Trump’s favorite Democrat.’ Tonight, he yet again proves why,” Boyle wrote on social media.
Questions regarding Fetterman’s dedication to his Senate duties have also surfaced. A recent Wall Street Journal report highlighted that the senator has cancelled constituent meetings and skipped appointments with injured veterans, citing illness, only to appear later for media interviews regarding Israel and the conflict with Iran.
Political polling reflects a dramatic shift in Fetterman’s standing within Pennsylvania. A survey conducted last month by The New York Times, Siena College, and The Philadelphia Inquirer found that 73 percent of Republican voters approve of his performance, up significantly from 25 percent in 2024. Conversely, approval among Democrats in the state has plummeted from 74 percent to 22 percent, with 63 percent of Democratic respondents holding an unfavorable view of him.
Despite the backlash and speculation about his political future, Fetterman has denied any intention to switch parties. “I’m not going to be a Republican, but I’m going to be a Democrat that’s going to have a conversation with whoever is playing it straight,” he told Fox News in a recent interview.
The upcoming November election will determine control of Congress for the remainder of Trump’s term. While Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers, they face challenges as voters express frustration over economic costs and Trump’s declining popularity. For Democrats, reclaiming the Senate is particularly difficult as only one-third of seats are up for grabs, whereas all 435 House seats are contested. Fetterman is not scheduled to seek re-election until 2028.
