According to a report by Greg Jaffe of The New York Times, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has intensified cultural battles within the armed forces, allegedly implementing policies that disproportionately hinder the career advancement of Black and female senior officers. Jaffe’s analysis highlights that these measures have resulted in a disproportionate blocking of promotions for these demographic groups.
In addition to concerns regarding promotion equity, the report indicates that Hegseth is actively engaged in removing transgender individuals from military service. These actions mark a significant escalation of culture war dynamics into the highest levels of defense leadership, raising questions about the direction of military personnel policy under his tenure.
The findings underscore a period of substantial friction between the current administration’s social priorities and the traditional structure of the U.S. military.
