Data Reveals Gap Between Trump’s Cost-of-Living Promises and Economic Reality

Two years after President Donald Trump campaigned on pledges to reduce the American cost of living—specifically promising gasoline below $2 a gallon and 2% mortgage rates—data indicates that prices for many essential goods remain sharply higher. With midterm elections approaching, the disparity between his campaign commitments and the financial pressures facing voters is increasingly fueling public dissatisfaction with the economy.

According to a recent CBS News poll, nine in ten Americans cite prices as the primary factor shaping their economic outlook, despite solid growth and low unemployment rates. Economists note that while consumer price pressures predate Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025, stemming from five years of post-pandemic inflation, his policies have further complicated the landscape. Forecast data suggests September inflation rose to an annual rate of 3.6%, exceeding the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. 1. The poll numbers make sense when you look at grocery receipts. Gasoline under two dollars feels like a distant memory now.

  2. Wait, did Trump actually promise 2% mortgage rates? That sounds like a fantasy from another timeline, honestly.

  3. It is frustrating that tariffs seem to punish average consumers instead of protecting them. Prices are still way too high.
