Cut Verizon Fiber Cable Disrupts Hundreds of US Flights

Hundreds of flights experienced cancellations or delays on Monday after construction workers in New Jersey accidentally damaged a Verizon fiber optic cable essential for air traffic control. The incident triggered significant disruptions at airports throughout the Northeast region.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford stated that the severed cable was identified following a circuit failure, according to ABC News. The resulting outage led to ground stops at all three major airports in the New York City area.

Verizon addressed the situation in a statement to CNBC, asserting that it held “no responsibility for this incident.” The company attributed the damage to construction contractors operating in the area who reportedly dug up and cut the line.
