Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Christopher Harborne has pledged £36m to Reform UK, mirroring a donation of the same amount made by fellow billionaire Ben Delo. The contributions stand as the largest ever recorded for a UK political party and are expected to reignite debates over imposing limits on political giving.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described himself as both “honoured and humbled” by the support from Delo and Harborne. These announcements arrive while the party faces significant examination regarding its financial operations. The Metropolitan police are currently investigating allegations of overseas donations, and Farage is subject to a parliamentary standards inquiry concerning a previous £5m gift from Harborne made prior to his election as an MP in 2024. Reform UK and Farage have denied any misconduct.
Farage stated that both donors recognize Reform as the only party capable of reversing the country’s trajectory and winning the next general election. He added that their generosity allows the party to compete on a level playing field.
Addressing potential speculation, Harborne emphasized that he expects no rewards, such as a peerage or policy concessions, in exchange for his donation. He noted that his wealth is sufficient for his lifetime and that his motivation is to benefit Britain and humanity. “I want the same as everyone else in Britain: for my children and grandchildren to have the chance to live happy and productive lives here and be rewarded for their hard work,” Harborne said.
He concluded that voters will choose the party they believe can best achieve those goals, and he is making this donation to support the party he thinks can deliver.
With the Met investigating overseas donations already, adding another massive sum raises serious questions about transparency.
