Thousands of demonstrators assembled outside the Kennedy Center on Friday evening to voice their opposition to President Donald Trump’s plans for the institution. The gathering followed an incident in which the president was photographed holding a placard reading, “Kennedy Center DEMOLIS…” raising fears that he may attempt to tear down the landmark.
Protesters crowded the streets of the Foggy Bottom neighborhood in Washington, temporarily halting traffic as they participated in the “Hands Around the Kennedy Center” demonstration. The marble facade of the center remained obscured by scaffolding and tarpaulins during the event.
Many attendees carried signs and wore costumes as part of the rally. During the program, the crowd booed whenever the president was mentioned, signaling strong discontent with his proposed changes to the arts venue.
I saw the photo of him holding that sign and honestly? I’m terrified this isn’t just a joke. Please tell me it’s not real.
The scaffolding obscuring the marble facade is such a stark visual. Hope they preserve the building no matter what happens here.
