The findings, published in Nature Medicine, suggest that this trait plays a crucial role in determining clinical outcomes despite comparable brain changes.
According to the research, cognitive resilience accounts for the striking variability in dementia severity seen in patients. While some individuals with high levels of Alzheimer’s-related brain pathology show few or no symptoms, others develop severe dementia. This new metric provides a framework for understanding why the progression of the disease varies so widely between people with similar underlying biological damage.
The study highlights the importance of looking beyond mere pathology counts when assessing patient risk. By incorporating cognitive resilience into predictive models, clinicians and researchers may gain a more accurate understanding of which individuals are most likely to progress from asymptomatic pathology to clinical dementia.
