Three prominent American news organizations announced on Monday that they are filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration after being banned from the White House. CNN, MS Now, and Politico stated in a joint declaration that the ban, issued by President Donald Trump, violates their First Amendment rights.
The outlets alleged that the White House revoked their journalists’ credentials “without notice or process” due to objections over their reporting. In their statement, the networks emphasized that the government should not have the power to dictate what the press publishes, warning that the restriction sets a dangerous precedent for independent journalism.
President Trump defended the move on social media, distinguishing his actions from an assault on a free press. Instead, he characterized the target as “FAKE NEWS,” describing it as a corrupt and pervasive threat to national security that has “grown like cancer.” He asserted that media outlets should not be permitted to report “fiction and lies” regarding the presidency.
This directive represents a significant escalation in Trump’s long-standing friction with the mainstream media, which dates back to his first term when he labeled the press “the enemy of the American people.” The ban also disrupted standard White House operations, as CNN was scheduled to serve as the television pool for the day before being replaced by a backup crew.
