Todd Boehly and Mark Walter have officially sold their shares in Chelsea Football Club, a transaction that grants private equity firm Clearlake Capital complete control of the Premier League side. Boehly, who has served as the club’s chairman, is stepping down from his role following the completion of the deal.
In a statement expressing confidence in the club’s future trajectory, Boehly noted that he believes Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under the new ownership structure.
The American billionaires were originally part of a consortium that partnered with Clearlake to acquire the club from Roman Abramovich. The sale was required by the UK government in May 2022. At the time, Clearlake held a 61.5% stake in the club, while Boehly, Walter, and fellow investor Hansjörg Wyss divided the remaining shares among themselves.
Boehly still believes in the club’s future despite leaving? That takes some real conviction. Let’s see if the players feel the same.
So the big spending era is officially over? Clearlake running the show makes me nervous for the summer transfer window.
