Marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the Central Intelligence Agency released several dozen declassified presidential daily briefs on Friday. The documents provide a detailed look at the intelligence gathered by U.S. government officials regarding Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida in the months leading up to the terrorist hijackings that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and fundamentally altered American national security.
According to the release, the briefs illustrate how security analysts tracked Bin Laden’s movements and his supporting infrastructure. They also highlight official concerns regarding potential threats to U.S. targets and offer insight into the agency’s understanding of his network both within the United States and abroad, including details on how his operations were financed.
